"I am the bread of life." "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me."

John 6: 48, 56, 57

If we desire to understand God's eternal purpose we must look at the very beginning. If we look in Genesis chapters one and two then we can see God's original intention for man.

God's Original Intention

In Genesis 1:26-31, we can clearly see God's original intention or purpose for creating man. He said, "Let Us make man in Our image." God wanted an exact representation of Himself. He said "Us" because this image would need to be corporate, not individual, just like He is corporate and not individual. Your God is not an individual! He is a fellowship (or community) of three Persons who are one. His image would need to be the same in order to accurately represent Him. Now, when we think of an image, we think in terms of something like a photograph. If you take a photograph of someone then you have an "image" of that person.

However, that is not the kind of image that God wants. Even though a photo looks like the person, it is still just a piece of paper with some chemicals on it. It is only two dimensional and does not contain the life of that person. God not only wants His image to "look" like Him, He wants it to be Him! In other words, He wants it to contain His very life. So God created man with the capacity to contain His very own life, divine life. But how would this happen? How would God get His life into man?

The Tree of Life

How was man gong to fulfill God's eternal purpose for him by becoming His image? Would it be by obeying His commandments? Would it be by man doing all the "right" things and trying to imitate or copy the character and actions of God? Would it be man just living out his life on earth in peace and not harming the environment or his fellow creatures? No! None of these things would fulfill God's purpose to have an image. Man would need to have the very life of God within him and then would need to live by that same divine life. But how would this happen? By man eating of the tree of life! God only expected man to do one thing in order for him to fulfill His eternal purpose, eat!

Of course, we know that Adam didn't eat from the tree of life but instead ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And so, mankind (including most believers) has been focusing and feeding on knowledge and what's good and evil, right and wrong, ever since.

Christ came as the true Tree of Life so that we could fulfill God's original intention, but we are still eating from the other tree!

What is the Food?

The problem is threefold. We don't know what the food is, where the food is, or how to eat it. We still think that spiritual food is knowledge based on the right moral choices. What is good and evil, right and wrong is still paramount for us. We spend all of our time on building up our knowledge of these things. To us, sound doctrine and correct teaching are everything. This is our food. Many Christians go to "church" for the sole reason of getting fed spiritually. They look at the church as being a food station or restaurant. But is that Sunday morning sermon really feeding you?

What about the bible? Many believers go to the scriptures to be fed. Here again, this is usually based upon teachings that are directed and taken into your head, not your spirit. The scriptures can only give you life if you know how to feed on them with your spirit and not turn them into food for your intellect. So what is food?

One day a man stood up in the synagogue and shouted: "I AM the Bread of Life! He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him."

The Food is Christ Himself! Not teachings about Him, or doctrines, or knowledge of the scriptures. Our daily bread is a Person. Our daily bread is the life of God coming to us from that Person. (see John 5:39, 40)

Where is the Food?

Now that we know what (or Who) the food is, now we need to know the location of the food. The food is Christ and He lives within you. "Christ in you, the hope of glory!" declares Paul. Specifically, the food is within your spirit. God's Spirit, and all that He is, lives inside of your innermost being, within your human spirit. That is the place where you must go to dine with the Lord. That is the place where you go to fellowship with Him. That is the place where you go to eat the living Bread! We need to learn how to enter into the holy of holies, deep within us, to feast on the living Lord.

How to Eat

Just as you have an organ for eating in the physical (the mouth), so you also have an organ to eat spiritually. That organ is your spirit. You must learn* how to exercise your spirit in order to contact your Lord within so that you can eat of His life. The Tree of Life is now living within you! God is going to have His living image by you and I learning to eat from that Tree.
