"Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

Genesis 1:26

I would like to call your attention to a few things here in the first chapter of the bible. The section immediately preceding verse 26 describes God's act of creating life on the earth. Verses 3-25 speak of His creation of light, firmament, water, stars, the sun, the moon, fish, birds, cattle, etc. In all of this description the scriptures use the phrases: "then God said" or "then God made". It is always God speaking in the singular. But in verse 26 everything changes! When God creates man He speaks in the plural! "Let Us make man in Our image."

God's Image

This is because man is the only creature who is created in God's image. Therefore, it is very clear that God's image is plural! Just as God is three Persons in one, so He created man to be many persons in one. THEY would have dominion over the earth. Do you see a corporate image here? Do you see the corporate man God wanted to create? When you read the first two chapters of the bible look for God's eternal purpose. This was before sin came into the picture. God did not create an individual man; He created them male and female. Woman was created out of man. She was taken out of his side. Don't forget that! The two shall become one. Here is where we get to the apex of our story, Oneness! Remember, God is three Persons in One. He created man to be One in Him! He did not create you to be an independent self!

Man still needed something. Oneness had not taken place yet because man had not taken the Life of God into himself. Instead, he chose to be separate, isolated, and independent. This brought fragmentation. Man could not be whole because man could not be one.

You see wholeness can only be created and maintained by oneness. Without oneness, there can only be fragmentation and separation. All of our problems, as humans, stem from this fragmentation, which is caused by our separation, which is caused by our independence (individualism). Without oneness, there can be no wholeness. The bible calls this independence sin! It was the independent spirit who tempted Eve to act independently and separate herself from God and man (Adam).

Oneness Restored

Even though man had fallen, God already had a plan to restore him! Isn't He wonderful? Since God's purpose was oneness, there was nothing that would stand in the way of God's purpose being fulfilled. He would have His purpose regardless of sin, devil, and death! I really don't believe that most Christians understand what God did on the cross of Calvary. You see, there were two things that took place there. First there was the Lord's death. It says in Colossians two that the Lord Jesus took upon Himself not only the sins of the world, but also all law, principalities and powers, the old fallen creation, the devil, and death itself! All of this (and more) was crucified with Him. We all know that He died so that you could have forgiveness of sins. This gave you (potentially) a clear standing with God. But what about the oneness? What was provided for the oneness?

An Overlooked Event

Something happened on the cross that is almost completely overlooked by most scholars, preachers, and Christianity as a whole. This event happened after Jesus died while He was still hanging there. Do you remember what it was? His side was pierced! Why in the world would they do such a thing? He was already dead! Out of His side flowed blood and water. Blood and water represent Life. But life for whom? The one who was taken out of His side! Remember Adam? His side was opened so that his helpmeet, Eve, would come forth. Then the scriptures tell us that the two shall become one! Yes of course, I am referring to the Bride of Christ! On the day of resurrection His body was raised, not only His physical body, but also His spiritual Body. Now . . . we can see unity! Now . . . we can see Oneness! You were saved not to be an individual, independent self! You were saved to participate in Oneness! You were saved to bear the image of a plural (in one) God. You were saved to be the Body of Christ! Oneness restored ... wholeness restored!

The Need for a Model

The problem we now have is that even though we have been made one through the death and resurrection of our Lord, we still don't know how to live like it! We don't know anything about oneness. In our minds, we only know individualism and separation. So, how are we going to practically walk in this oneness on a daily basis? We need a model. We need something to look at that can show us the way. Jesus came and did just that for three years with twelve men. After the Lord left (physically) they showed this model to the three thousand in Jerusalem, and so on, and so on. We have been referring to this as the Perfect Model.

Now let me caution you at this point. Even though we are calling the "fellowship of the Godhead" a model. Please realize that you cannot imitate or copy this model. You cannot imitate God! You cannot imitate oneness! If you attempt to imitate the Life of God, all you will come up with is religion and law! We cannot imitate the oneness within the Godhead. WE CAN ONLY PARTICIPATE IN IT! God's desire is for you to actually join into the fellowship happening within the Godhead even right now!

In the next several articles I will be pointing out some of the things our Lord shared with the twelve relating to the Perfect Model. Please keep in mind that these things describe the most beautiful, breath taking, glorious, and wonderful experience that there is, the fellowship of the Godhead! This is not something to be taken lightly. This is not another teaching for you to stuff into your intellectual cap! These things need to be experienced!

God is calling you to His table. You are being invited to partake of the Tree of Life!

Won't you come?
